The nasty fact emerges

This is going to be a brief, information-sharing post for folks I have not been able to contact personally.

I haven’t been blogging much lately, but we’ve been having a fine winter here in Guanajuato. Although we are always aware that Jack is dealing with cancer, he has been very well and we’ve been able to keep that nasty fact under the radar.

Until Wednesday, when Jack collapsed in a seizure at a lunch with friends. (I wasn’t there.) He was taken to a local hospital/clinic by ambulance where he received quick attention and excellent care. Two CT scans later, and after consultation with a neurologist, we learned that he now has several small tumours in his brain. When he agreed to let me write this post, he insisted that I emphasize SMALL. And probably treatable. His positive attitude serves him well and helps keep me more upbeat too.

He is now feeling fine, on medication to control seizures and reduce the swelling surrounding the tumours. But obviously, he needs to get home to his oncology team for further tests and treatment alternatives.

We’re in the process of arranging flights home. It appears that everyone out of the country is trying to get back, and flights are full. A friend just emailed me expressing perfectly what we’re feeling right now: confused and a bit disoriented by having our own personal health crisis competing with a global health crisis. So, we don’t know our exact plans but we expect to be back in Canada sometime next week.

I love the positive attitude. The world is a little off-kilter right now…positive attitudes help. I knew Professor Dunning when I worked at Algoma in the 70s and early 80s. And I read your book Paula. I feel like I know you both, and I’m sending hugs of encouragement.

    Hi Paula
I was very saddened to hear the news about Jack.
Old age is scary especially with our own decline and that of family and friends.
Wishing you both the strength and courage to carry on.

Oh…Paula. My tears aren’t going to help but I think it was very courageous of you to share this info. Too many similar memories. I’ll send Jack digital hugs and kisses. That seems better than ‘thoughts and prayers’. Love you both. CLN
