Guanajuato! A colonial city in central Mexico where we live part of the year.
A rich tangle of tiny alleyways with architecture adapting to steep hills and tiny irregular lots provides rich textures and ever-changing lights. Once the major source of gold and silver in the world, Guanajuato is often described in tour books as more like early Spain than anything left in Spain itself. An important centre of the Mexican revolution, it contains a rich cultural history of the last two centuries as well. Currently, as a UNESCO site, the original architecture and flavour of the city are carefully maintained.
