Lake Superior, the great inland sea, changes daily, from an angry monster to a benign friend. One day you can be peacefully kayaking along the rocky shore, and the next you can be safely on land photographing huge splashes of water as the waves hit those same rocks. The land on the Eastern shore is rugged, with steep rocky cliffs and trees barely hanging on, beautiful sandy beaches separated by rocky headlands, and mixed forest. Yet there are many peaceful spots inland, along the many rivers and in the forest. Fall brings brilliant colours to the maples in the southern areas, while the northern areas, north of the limit of the maples, offer more muted yellows and oranges.
